PostHeaderIcon Winter Mountaineering

The mountains in winter offer a different set of challenges. Climbing to the top of a snowy summit may require the use of crampons and a walking axe. The route to the summit may require accurate navigation in poor visibility. You will have to consider conditions under foot, slippery ice patches and the quality of the snow pack.

Greater challenges bring greater rewards and the views on a clear winter's day from the summit of a high mountain are truely amazing.

Our winter mountaineering sessions usually run from Aviemore or Fort William this offers a greater chance of good conditions, how ever if conditions permit we will run sessions in North Wales. The course will include ascents of major mountain summits like Ben Nevis and Cairngorm so a good level of fitness is essential. During the course we will address the added considerations for winter mountaineering including axe and crampon use, weather considerations, hazard awareness and assessment leading to safer route choice.

The equipment you bring should be good quality and specifically designed for mountaineering. It should include 4 season boots, waterproof outer shell, thermal inner shell, hats, gloves, headtorch, ski goggles and a rucksack big enough to carry it all in. An axe and crampons can be hired locally if you do not have your own.

Courses in Scotland will last for 2 days and cost £150 per person. For the course to run a minimum of 4 people are required.

Courses in Wales can last from 1 day and cost £100 per person. For courses to run a minimum of 4 people are required.
